1985年発表。The Byrds、Eagles、Flying Burrito Brothersの系譜に連なる名手たちが集結し、ブルーグラスへの深い愛情を形にした隠れた傑作。Chris Hillman、Bernie Leadon、Al Perkins、David Mansfield、Jerry Scheffという豪華メンバーによって結成されたEVER CALL READYは、1980年代のカントリー・ロック・シーンにおいて極めて異色の存在だった。彼らが選んだのは流行のナッシュビル・サウンドでも商業的なカントリー・ポップでもない。ブルーグラスとゴスペル。それも彼らが若き日に親しんだ、アメリカ南部の伝統音楽そのものだった。マンドリン、ドブロ、フィドル、アコースティック・ギターが織りなすアンサンブルは実に美しく、4声ハーモニーは息を呑むほど自然で豊か。技巧を誇示するのではなく、歌そのものの力を大切にした演奏が続く。Chris HillmanとBernie Leadonは、EaglesやThe Byrds以前からブルーグラスを演奏していた筋金入りのルーツ・ミュージシャン。本作は彼らにとって原点回帰であると同時に、長年培ってきた経験の集大成でもある。収録曲の多くはゴスペル・スタンダードや伝統曲だが、宗教色以上に感じられるのはアメリカン・ルーツ・ミュージックへの敬意と愛情である。派手なヒットとは無縁だった。しかし本作には、商業的成功よりも大切なものが刻まれている。ブルーグラスの伝統。仲間とのハーモニー。そして歌を受け継ぐ喜び。Americanaという言葉が一般化する以前に作られた、極上のルーツ・ミュージック作品。
